Each home has a household spirit called a Domovoi. He appears as a small, bearded, hairy man, and can often be heard banging around the cupboards and hallways in the middle of the night. He may live in the stove, attic, under stairways, or in the shed. A family should leave gifts for their Domovoi, for if he is happy, he will keep peace and order in the household.
